The Fossil Coral, tens of millions of years old, is in fact a skeleton of Coral composed of calcium carbonate that has fossilized over time. The fossilization process of the Coral can take millions of years and takes place in several stages. After the death of the Coral, its limestone frame remains. Over time, this skeleton is buried by sediment. Geological conditions, such as pressure and temperature, will then promote mineralization. That is, the minerals in the sediments and surrounding water will gradually replace the organic matter and calcium carbonate that make up the initial skeleton, resulting in its petrification. This long process results in a fossil that often retains the appearance and structure of the original coral, now composed of minerals such as Calcite, Aragonite or silica. The Fossil Coral can have a wide variety of colours, more or less bright, depending on the minerals that replaced it and the presence of other elements such as iron or manganese. Remarkable specimens are extracted in areas that were once marine environments, mainly in Australia, the USA, Indonesia or Japan.
