The Lithophyses of the Esterel massif (Var, 83) are intriguing geological formations, created about 250 million years ago from lava flows composed of Rhyolite, a type of magmatic rock. Over time, an aqueous solution saturated with silica infiltrated into gas-filled cavities called vacuoles. Silica then begins to crystallize, under the influence of factors such as pressure, temperature and the presence of other minerals, thus creating these geodes with various and complex internal structures. The size of Lithophyses can vary considerably, ranging from a few centimetres to several tens of centimetres in diameter for larger specimens discovered. The outer surface of the geodes, which may have a smooth, rough, hustle or granular texture, has colours ranging from brown to white, sometimes with shades of green and pink.
Although their exterior appearance seems unattractive at first glance, once sawn and polished, the Lithophyses reveal an incredible variety of shades and drawings stimulating imagination. Indeed, their elaborate internal architecture, enriched by mineral inclusions and various colours, serves as a backdrop to patterns, shapes and landscapes that each viewer can interpret in his own way. These internal structures are mainly composed of Calcedoine, a form of microcrystalline silica, the colour of which varies according to the oxides it contains. It is common to find inclusions of other minerals such as Calcite or Quartz, adding additional attraction to these geological treasures. The Lithophyse was formed in several regions of the world, in addition to the Esterel massif in France. In particular, there are deposits in the USA, Mexico, Nicaragua, Iceland and Russia.
In lithotherapy, Lithophyse is considered a stone of protection and energetic healing. According to these beliefs, it would relieve emotional pain and injury, while bringing strength and vitality. Associated with the Racine and Sacred Chakras, it is known to improve eloquence, harmonize emotions and promote a better circulation of vital energies. The Lithophyse symbolizes harmony and fluidity.
To protect the Lithophyse from any alteration, it is recommended to avoid contact with chemical substances, thermal shocks or prolonged sun exposure. For cleaning, preferably use humidified tissue or warm water. Make sure to dry the specimen with a soft fabric.
