Amethyst: Description and Healing Properties

Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz composed of silicon dioxide with traces of iron. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek word Amethustos, an adjective derived from the verb meaning “to be intoxicated”. Legend has it that the Romans once drank wine from Amethyst cups to protect themselves from drunkenness. The most productive deposits are found in Brazil and Uruguay, where geodes can reach several meters in height. Amethyst is also found in other countries such as France, Belgium, and Mexico, for example.

Amethyst is a powerful protection stone known for calming feelings of anger, fear, and sadness. It is also said to help with emotional and relational dependency and to regulate addictive or excessive behaviors. It is reputed to promote deep, restorative sleep and to ward off nightmares. Associated with the Crown Chakra, it is believed to increase intuition and facilitate meditation. Amethyst symbolizes purification, awareness, and wisdom.

Precautions and Care for Amethyst

Amethyst requires special care to preserve its brilliance. It can lose its color and luster if exposed to direct sunlight for too long. Avoid all contact with chemicals, including perfumes and cosmetics. To clean Amethyst, use a soft damp cloth or briefly immerse it in lukewarm water. After cleaning, dry it thoroughly.
